Wash ski clothing according to its care label

A ski jacket and trousers do not necessarily need one standard wash. Read each label, identify the model and plan cleaning and drying as a connected process.

After a holiday, putting all winter clothing into the machine together can seem straightforward. Different materials, insulation and features may require different treatment, however. Sort by the instructions for each garment rather than colour alone. GORE-TEX also emphasises the garment manufacturer’s instructions in its care information. They provide the starting point before choosing a programme, cleaning product and drying method.

Make every care instruction readable

Find the complete label and photograph it if it is awkward to read while handling the garment. Check separate instructions for removable inner jackets or other independent components. A brand name alone does not establish care for a particular combination.

If a label is missing or illegible, note the model or article number and ask the manufacturer. A similar-looking jacket online may contain different materials.

Prepare pockets and features

Empty every pocket, including small internal compartments. Remove lift passes, tissues, keys and snacks before washing. Then check the instructions for preparing closures, flaps and detachable elements.

Record visible damage before cleaning. An open hem or sticking zip should not first become apparent after the wash. For uncertain damage, enquire beforehand about appropriate treatment or repair services.

Choose a suitable programme and product

Take the temperature, washing method and permitted products from the label and corresponding manufacturer guidance. There is no universal setting here for all ski clothing. A detergent marketed for technical garments must still suit the particular item.

GORE-TEX publishes different procedures for different product types. Even a familiar material name therefore does not justify selecting an arbitrary standard guide. Establish the correct category before starting the machine.

Plan drying before washing

Confirm whether the garment should hang, lie flat or use an approved machine programme for drying. Allow sufficient space and time. Do not begin washing the evening before departure if the permitted drying process will then be impractical.

Additional heat treatment or renewing a water-repellent finish should follow the specific instructions. Do not infer approval from advice covering another model. Resolve uncertainty with the manufacturer before taking that step.

Store only once the process is complete

Check the garment after care and allow further drying where needed. Include thicker hems, pocket areas and separately treated components. Avoid packing anything tightly while the care process remains unfinished.

Keep the label photograph and relevant manufacturer guidance for the next clean. A brief note about permitted methods and separate components saves another search without replacing the original instructions.

A considered wash starts with the specific garment and finishes after its intended drying process. Sort equipment accordingly, prepare pockets and closures and resolve missing instructions before starting. Care then stays focused rather than applying one rule to every winter textile you own.
