Try a ski helmet carefully before buying

Use the size chart as a starting point, then assess fit, adjustment, and compatibility with your goggles on the particular helmet you intend to wear.

A winter sports participant adjusts a helmet with both hands.

A suitable number on the size label is a useful beginning, but it does not complete the helmet choice. Heads with similar circumferences can have different shapes, and helmet models differ too. Allow time to compare several candidates. Bring your goggles and read the particular manufacturer’s guidance rather than transferring the settings from a previous helmet to a new one without checking.

Measure, then compare several shapes

Measure head circumference in the way described by the manufacturer’s sizing guidance. Compare the result with the chart for the actual model. A label such as M is not a dependable common reference across different ranges. Trying helmets is especially helpful if your measurement falls between sizes.

First place the helmet in its intended position. Notice local pressure at the forehead, temples, or back of the head. An adjustment dial can refine the fit of a suitable helmet but cannot replace every unsuitable basic shape. Wear a candidate for several minutes to check the initial impression.

Adjust fastenings according to the instructions

Ask for a demonstration of the fit system and chin strap. Set them according to the helmet guidance and check fit using the movements described there. Smith, for example, recommends a snug but not uncomfortably tight fit and describes checking during head movements. Do not transfer a universal finger-width rule to every model.

Practise opening and closing the fastener with the gloves you will use. It should be accessible without inadvertently changing its adjustment. If operation remains unclear, resolve it with a specialist retailer before deciding on the helmet.

Include the goggles in the same fitting

Put on your goggles and inspect the interface above their frame. Check whether the helmet pushes them down or changes their position on your face. Do not move the helmet away from its intended position merely to accommodate large goggles. Another frame shape may be a better match.

Include only head coverings or additional components whose use the helmet manufacturer permits. Removing padding yourself or adding improvised inserts is not an appropriate way to correct an unsuitable fit. Also note the inspection, care, and replacement guidance for the model you choose.

Decide once the shape, adjustment, and goggles work together. Have unresolved questions about the specific model addressed by a specialist, and keep its instructions. A patient fitting provides a better basis for choosing than a quick glance in the mirror or selecting a size largely because you like the colour.
